Fixed Price versus Utility Plans
These ‘well-tested’ hosting plans offer the highest degree of flexibility, affordability, and customization.
FileMaker Server 14 provides the latest technology to the FileMaker Platform; however, FileMaker Server 14 is not simply for those who utilize FileMaker Pro 14. FileMaker Server 14 supports the following versions:
*** please note that FileMaker Pro 15 for Teams is not directly supported
We have been hosting FileMaker solutions since 1998. We understand that many users have spent a lot of time, money, and stress to create the ‘ideal’ solution for their business, organization, or ministry.
If a solution is ‘mature’ and is not undergoing development, many users will choose to not upgrade and/or change their solutions- we understand this process and we are happy to continue ‘legacy’ versions of FileMaker Server.
We can offer any version of FileMaker on a Dedicated Server; however, the following versions are supported by our legacy shared hosting plans:
In May of 2016, FileMaker, Inc. introduced a new version of the FileMaker Platform- FileMaker 15. This new product release included a new pricing structure (FileMaker for Teams) which for some provides a much less complex way to purchase FileMaker. FileMaker 15 also introduced a newer licensing which prevents Worldcloud (and any other vendor) from being able to legally offer some of the same plans which we have offered with previous versions of FileMaker.
While the new pricing is less expensive for some, for others it represents a 300% increase over previous versions of FileMaker and does not have the flexibility to ‘mix and match’ products. Fortunately, FileMaker still offers several of the ‘older’ license types (including, the AVLA- Annual Volume License Agreements), although they are not publically shown on their website. Whether you purchase your FileMaker licenses directly from FileMaker, purchase via Worldcloud, and/or have Worldcloud provide your licensing; we are happy to evaluate your needs and give you our recommendations.
Unlike FileMaker sales staff, we are not in the business of selling FileMaker licensing. Since we are not fiscally motivated to ‘sell’ you the newest version of FileMaker, we can provide candid conversations to determine which options are best for your company. We also bundle FileMaker with other software to provide deployment options which FileMaker staff will not generally consider.
Worldcloud has combined several products from FileMaker, Inc. which represent what we feel is a ‘best of both worlds’ approach to FileMaker hosting; however, this approach has put us at odds with FileMaker, Inc. which has removed our links from their website. This decision to host plans beyond the ‘FileMaker for Teams’ licensing is in direct violation of their objectives, but it happens to be a much more customer-friendly approach which provides realistic options for those users which have use-cases which do not ‘fit’ within the FileMaker for Teams pricing structure.
Fixed Price versus Utility Plans
scenario 1: Five user company
Utilizing the ‘FileMaker for Teams’, each user is charged for their FileMaker licensing. In this day and age where users have a desktop, a laptop, a tablet, and a phone; this ‘per user’ licensing means that a user only pays once, no matter how many devices they happen to utilize.
A five person company where half the users have both a desktop and a laptop and other have a laptop and an iPhone; this licensing model will save money and simplify licensing. The basis on this determination is that these are ‘regular’ users, which happen to access FileMaker from multiple devices. While this is a very valid use-case, we find that many of the clients which come to Worldcloud are looking to share FileMaker beyond their ‘normal’ users. FileMaker WebDirect, FileMaker Go, and/or a custom iOS app built with FileMaker are all methods where FileMaker solutions may be delivered to a user which may not justify the expense of FileMaker Pro.
For the sake of this conversation, we are going to call these users ‘guests’. Since the FileMaker for Teams license model is based on each user, there is no provision for ‘guest’ users. Utilizing the traditional hosting plans from Worldcloud, we can support guest users.
This model is charged on the capacity of the server to support users, not the users themselves. The following are just a few examples of how a FileMaker solution may be extended to guest users.
FileMaker has the ability to ‘compile’ (most) any FileMaker solution into an iOS app which is distributable in the Apple AppStore, The fact that you have presented your app in the Apple AppStore, normally means that you are looking to add a (potentially) large number of users. If you app is used sporadically, then it will be much more cost effective to license your server based on capacity, as opposed to licensing for each specific user.
Although not technically a ‘guest user’, our vApp for FileMaker service is a method to deliver a full FileMaker Pro experience to a user without the need for them to install and/or purchase FileMaker Pro. There are a number of uses for these clients, but one popular use is to provide FileMaker to a contractor, an intern, or other user where you do not want your copy of FileMaker to ever be installed on their system.
These plans are available on a monthly basis, so if you hire five extra employees to assist you with an annual event, using this service you may provide them access to your FileMaker solution for two months and avoid the need to purchase annual FileMaker licensing for these users.
